The trip at a glance

Driving north means you finish in the tropics. Book a one-way rental — Sydney pick-up, Cairns drop-off — and expect a one-way fee on top of the daily rate. The calculator on our home page adds it to your total.

Driving times below are approximate and assume no long stops. Motorhomes are slower than cars, so add time for fuel, food and the occasional roadworks.

Most rental agreements don't allow ferries, and doing so can void the insurance. For K'gari and Magnetic Island, leave the motorhome on the mainland and take a tour or a passenger ferry.

Day by day

  1. Day 1: Sydney to Port Stephens

    About 2.5 hours

Pick up in the morning, stock up on groceries and get out of the city before the afternoon traffic. Port Stephens has calm bays for a first easy evening while you learn the vehicle.

  2. Day 2: Port Stephens

    Rest day

Dolphin cruises and the Stockton Bight sand dunes. A no-driving day early on helps everyone settle in.

  3. Day 3: Port Stephens to Port Macquarie

    About 2.5 hours

Coastal walks and the koala hospital make this an easy family stop.

  4. Day 4: Port Macquarie to Coffs Harbour

    About 2 hours

Short drive, beaches and a walk out to Muttonbird Island.

  5. Day 5: Coffs Harbour to Byron Bay

    About 3 hours

Arrive early — Byron's campsites fill quickly in school holidays.

  6. Day 6: Byron Bay

    Rest day

Lighthouse walk at sunrise, swim at the main beach, hinterland markets.

  7. Day 7: Byron Bay to the Gold Coast

    About 1 hour

Cross into Queensland. Theme parks or a quieter southern Gold Coast beach day.

  8. Day 8: Gold Coast

    Rest day

Time for a theme park if you have children — or a hinterland drive to Springbrook.

  9. Day 9: Gold Coast to Noosa

    About 2.5 hours

Bypass Brisbane on the motorway and head for the Sunshine Coast.

  10. Day 10: Noosa

    Rest day

Noosa National Park coastal track and the river.

  11. Day 11: Noosa to Hervey Bay

    About 2.5 hours

Base for K'gari (Fraser Island). Rental agreements generally don't allow ferries, so book a 4WD day tour from Hervey Bay.

  12. Day 12: Hervey Bay — K'gari day tour

    Rest day for the motorhome

Lake McKenzie and the eastern beach on an organised tour. Whale-watching season runs through the cooler months.

  13. Day 13: Hervey Bay to Agnes Water

    About 3.5 hours

Agnes Water and the Town of 1770 — the last surf beach heading north.

  14. Day 14: Agnes Water

    Rest day

Beach day, or a boat trip out to Lady Musgrave Island.

  15. Day 15: Agnes Water to Yeppoon

    About 3.5 hours

Break up the long north stretch on the Capricorn Coast.

  16. Day 16: Yeppoon to Airlie Beach

    About 5.5 hours

The longest driving day. Start early and share the driving if you can.

  17. Day 17: Airlie Beach — Whitsundays

    Rest day

Day cruise to Whitehaven Beach and Hill Inlet.

  18. Day 18: Airlie Beach

    Rest day

Spare day for weather — cruises are sometimes cancelled in strong wind.

  19. Day 19: Airlie Beach to Townsville

    About 4 hours

Passenger ferry to Magnetic Island for a day, leaving the motorhome on the mainland.

  20. Day 20: Townsville to Mission Beach

    About 3 hours

Rainforest meets the sea. Look out for cassowaries on the roads.

  21. Day 21: Mission Beach to Cairns

    About 2 hours

Drop off in Cairns. Check depot closing times before booking flights.

Which motorhome for this trip?

Three weeks is a long time in a small space. A family of four is usually more comfortable in a 6-berth with a separate bed that doesn't have to be made up each night, and an onboard shower and toilet make free and basic campsites possible. See our 6-berth comparison for sleeping layouts, child-seat space and fuel use.

Before you book

  • Check the depot's opening hours in Cairns before you book flights home.
  • Ask whether the one-way fee is included in the price you're quoted.
  • Diesel use for 6-berth rentals is published at 11–14 litres per 100 km. Over about 2,800 km with detours, that is roughly 310–390 litres.
  • Book Byron Bay, Noosa and Airlie Beach campsites ahead during school holidays.
